International Public Health Internship Program

The International Public Health Internship Program is a nine-month global health program that targets vulnerable populations living in sub-Sarahan Africa. Interns will work with project managers and health care professionals in Bauchi, Nigeria. Working together, interns will develop and implement public health campaigns that target major health concerns such as immunization, reproductive health, adolescent health, food and nutrition, child health, drugs, food hygiene and safety, control of Malaria, and HIV/ AIDS.

Educating the local community about key healthcare issues is an important part of this internship. Promoting awareness is the best way to ensure the prevention of avoidable diseases. Interns will create public health campaigns that will be presented in these communities.

The International Public Health Internship provides students the opportunity to understand the challenges faced by communities around the world. Interns are sure to gain greater cultural awareness and a broader perspective on the challenges and rewards of the field of medicine.

Public Health Campaigns

Explore Key Issues in Nigeria’s Public Healthcare System and Bringing Research-driven Change

Choose a Global Public Health Topic

Interns will explore a variety of community health issues and how they intersect with gender, environmental, and behavioral studies. Students will work with their team to develop and implement campaigns on topics that range from promoting disease prevention to living a healthy life.

Partner with Community Healthcare Professionals

Interns start by identifying a need in the community and working with their assigned on-site mentor to develop solutions. Students will also work with local community healthcare liaisons to ensure that they are informed about cultural issues and assisted with overcoming any language barriers.

Interns will engage in research to provide support to often forgotten and over-looked demographics. Students will be pivotal in changing the health outcomes in an under-resourced area and learn how to report on problems surrounding health.

As an intern for the International Public Health Internship, students will use an interactive approach to learning that gives them an opportunity to immerse themself in the challenging complexities of health issues facing the world.

Interns will learn how to collect data, interpret survey methodology, and analyze health indicators within a supportive and solution-focused program. Project coordinators will work with internship teams to identify a public health issue affecting one community in sub-Saharan Africa. Interns will then develop an intervention to address that concern.

Study Major Public Health Challenges

Students will have the opportunity to work directly with top medical minds to learn about the major public health challenges facing the population of sub-Saharan Africa. Students will address these challenges through the creation of global health campaigns that directly target their identified issue.

Directly Improve & Change Lives

Interns will be immersed in the local communities to design interventions that can prevent and promote maternal and child health, nutrition, preventable disease initiatives, immunizations, and other health campaigns. Throughout the year students will turn everyday prevention methods into life-saving information that will be posted throughout communities in the developing world to directly improve health outcomes.
