Our Business Partner

Rose Sylvester

Business Statistics

Our business partner, Rose Sylvester, started her business by herself 6 years ago, and has grown that business into the sole source of income for her family. She is a mother of 8 children who help out in her business. Rose is also the only person in her area that sells vaseline products. Considering how important it is to protect ones skin during the winter months in Bauchi, her business is essential to those in her community.

Rose Sylvester

About Rose

"Rose Sylvester is a 56-year-old woman who lives in the Tirwun community of Bauchi state. She has 8 children who help within the business. Her children are mostly grown up with three of the girls already married.

Rose owns a business that makes petroleum jelly and vaseline products to moisturize skin and protect it from the harsh weather in Bauchi State. It also helps to keep skin hydrated, soft, and healthy for those who use vaseline everyday after bathing.

Rose's future goals are to provide her children with high levels of education, to own a shop in a strategic area to increase her profit, and to train other women in the community in vaseline-making."

Rose Sylvester

Community Impact

Rose Sylvester, a local vaseline seller in Nigeria, is constantly taking care of her local community's skin through her products specialized for the difficult weather her and her community face in Bauchi state. Currently, Rose is the sole owner of her business and has her 8 children and 2 apprentices to assist her in selling vaseline and other products. Rose has the ultimate goal to aid her community by taking great care of her community’s skin in the winter months, as she is the only person in her local area that sells vaseline and petroleum jelly products. Rose continues to make an impact in her community through her determination and hard work to assure that everyone in her community can stay healthy and hydrated during the harsh dry weather that overcomes Bauchi State in the winter.

Our Partnership

Our main goal when working with our business partner was to help grow her business. One such way we accomplished this was by creating a business name and logo, which would allow the customers to easily recognize the business. We also worked to create various forms of advertisements for the business, like billboards, flyers, and business cards, to help spread the word about Rose’s business in her community. Furthermore, we helped develop a more effective financial tracking system for her business which would allow her to easily see how much her business cost to run and how much she was making. With such knowledge, Rose could raise her prices or offer discounts, all to increase her profits and number of customers. Ultimately, we hope that the work we do with Rose will help her achieve what she wants for her business.

$750 GOAL

Sub-Saharan Africa has experienced some of the highest growth rates globally over the past 10 years. While this means that people in these nations have become more optimistic about their social and economic future, the region continues to face a myriad of historical problems. In order to continue steady growth and achieve a future of equitable conditions in the region, our International Internship Program team seeks to build stronger communities from the grassroots level through fundraising for community development.

Funds raised are used to implement community-based education programs, pay staff to run the operations on-site, and invest in training for local leaders. Leadership Initiatives uses fundraised money to develop a network of support for actionable change and accountability between our team, the Leadership Initiatives staff, and the community stakeholders we work with.
